ESP32 covers an expanding family of Espressif silicon. The choice between Xtensa and RISC-V, and between classic, S3, C6, and H2 variants, shapes what you can build more than the form factor does.

- Classic ESP32 (HUZZAH32, ESP32-WROOM-32D, FireBeetle 2 ESP32-E) is dual-core Xtensa at 240 MHz; ESP32-S3 adds USB-OTG and AI-acceleration instructions; ESP32-C3 and C6 are RISC-V single-core, with C6 gaining Wi-Fi 6, Zigbee, and Thread; ESP32-H2 drops Wi-Fi entirely for 802.15.4 mesh work.
- Form factor determines your workflow: Espressif and DFRobot DevKits are breadboard staples; Adafruit QT Py and Feathers (ESP32, S2, S3, C6) add STEMMA QT; FireBeetle 2 boards target low-power battery builds; Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 fits in a thumbnail.
- Integrated variants bundle the peripheral into the board: ESP32-CAM for camera work, Waveshare touch-display boards, M5Stack ATOM in finished enclosures, ESP32-S3-Korvo-1/2 for voice, ESP32-S3-EYE for vision — choose these over a bare DevKit when the add-on is the point of the project.
