DC motors

Gear ratio and encoder count decide more than voltage does. N20 micros, TT gearbox motors and 12V metal gearmotors trade size for stall torque — nail the RPM and counts-per-rev before the form factor.

N20 micros in 1:50–1:298 ratios, 6V TT gearbox motors (120:1, 160RPM), 12V quadrature encoder gearmotors up to 45kg.cm, plus coreless micros, vibration discs, USB fans and a few outlier brushless motors.

  • N20 micro metal gearmotors ship in 1:50, 1:100, 1:150 and 1:298 ratios, many with magnetic Hall encoders; the brackets, LEGO axle adaptors and push header shims in this group fit the same can.
  • TT gearbox motors (6V, 160RPM, 120:1) are the classic robot-car option; bi-metal 1:90 gearboxes and encoder versions exist, and the 65/80mm wheels here mount directly on the cross axle.
  • DFRobot's 12V metal gearmotors with quadrature encoders reach 45kg.cm (131:1, 83RPM) — a different power class from 6V micros, and they need a matching higher-current driver.
  • The group also holds coreless micro motors (4x12mm to 8.5x20mm), vibration motor discs, 5V USB square fans from 3 to 9 cm, and a 4015 3-phase brushless motor with an integrated AS5600 12-bit encoder — none of these are gearmotors.
